Lyric Corner

Our first entry comes from 1974. My buddies and I had been playing mini golf
and when we got in my '65 Malibu to leave - a moth was in there.
My friend, Mark, caught it to throw out the window and exclaimed

"Ooo - WINGDUST:

WINGDUST

You fly round and round and round
Blindly hitting the light
Hundreds of you around town
Fluttering and buzzing every night

Fly on fly on softly and just
Wingdust is all that remains
In our thoughts when you are gone
Wingdust - that's all

Your brother who flies in the sun
Lives but a day - one day
His beauty can never be outdone
Fluttering mainly in May

Fly on fly on softly and just
Wingdust is all that remains
In our thoughts when you are gone
Wingdust - that's all

So long my friendly winged moth
Your brother - the butterfly
For again I shall sing of you both
And your Wingdust in the sky

Fly on fly on softly and just
Wingdust is all that remains
In our thoughts when you are gone
Wingdust - that's all
Wingdust - that's all
Wingdust - that's all

For the Holidays - a song I wrote back in the mid-seventies.....

Christmas Is A Time

Christmas
I get a good feeling inside of me
Whenever we get our tree
And Snow begins to fall on you and me

Christmas
Kids are all excited and filled with hope
They never act naughty
They're good as gold
So they will have presents on
Christmas morning

Christmas is a time of happiness
Of giving, sharing and loving
It's a shame that Christmas can't be
Every day, Every day
Every day of the year

Christmas
I get a good feeling inside of me
Whenever we get our tree
And Snow begins to fall on you and me

Christmas is a time of happiness
Of giving, sharing and loving
It's a shame that Christmas can't be
Every day, Every day
Every day of the year

In November of 1975 I had recently seen Debbie for the first time in 5 year's and a year before had allowed my heart to be broken my first semester in College. Not a bad thing - lots of good songs came from that heartache.
Anywhoo - I found myself sitting ALL ALONE on the quad on a November day. I pulled out my notebook and these lyrics rushed forth.

Wishing It Was April Again

Dead Leaves
In the middle of an autumn
Sitting on this bench staring at
That Cold November sun
and
Wishing it was April Again
Wishing it was April Again

Snow bound
Stuck inside so warm and cozy
Looking at the snow
People's faces are the color of roses
and
Wishing it was April Again
Wishing it was April Again

Building character
After all those sleepless nights
Makes it all worth it
Another morning comes
and winter has turned into

April days
Years add up consecutively
Everything is green but
I'm still all alone
and
Wishing she was here again
Wishing she was here again
Wishing it was April again
Wishing it was April again

In 1969 I wrote a song about the Vietnam War called Speak Out For What You Believe In. Unfortunately it still rings true today.....

Speak Out (For What You Believe In)

Speak out for what you believe in
Sing it out so loud and clear
and if you do this my friend
The world will be One once again

Speak of a time when there's no more war
A time when there's no more hate
A time when the people have learned to live together

Right now's the time and the place
To save the whole human race
So do all that you can do
The world is just waiting for you

Speak of a time when there's no more war
A time when there's no more hate
A time when the people have learned to live together

You can make a difference
You will make a difference

Speak out for what you believe in
Sing it out so loud and clear
and if you do this my friend
The world will be One once again

Speak of a time when there's no more war
A time when there's no more hate
A time when the people have learned to live together

On a roll this year songwriting wise - here's my latest. The phrase Gently Falls kept coming into my head and I didn't know what to do with it. Then it occurred to me - here's the result

Gently Falls
Gently falls the autumn leaf
Reminding me what I can't believe
Gently Falls this lonely tear
The holidays without you here

Oh how my tear Gently Falls
Oh how my tear Gently Falls
I know the reason you must be away
But oh how my tear Gently Falls

Gently Falls the blowing snow
Reminding me I already know
Gently Falls this lonely tear
This bed's so cold without you here

Oh how my tear Gently Falls
Oh how my tear Gently Falls
I know the reason you must be away
But oh how my tear Gently Falls

You signed up serving your country
Helping to complete the mission
Feels like I signed up too
But what I'm doing
Is completely missing you....

Gently Falls the rain of Spring
My heart pounds when I hear the phone ring
Gently Falls this bitter tear
The sands of war are keeping you from me for another year

Oh how my tear Gently Falls
Oh how my tear Gently Falls
I know the reason you must be away
But oh how my tear Gently Falls
I know the reason you must be away
But oh how my tear Gently Falls

Gently Falls the autumn leaf

My Eyes Well Up

My eyes well up
As I watch you walk away
I cannot speak
There's nothing left to say
All alone in this crowded cafe
I stare down at my cup
While my eyes well up
My eyes well Up

My eyes well up
Remembering happier yesterdays
We were as one
Nothing ever got in our way
Now you've left me sitting in this cafe
Stirring nothing in this cup
While my eyes well up
My eyes well up

I'd always thought love could grow
But never could it be so
That you could go away

All alone in this crowded cafe
I pay for this empty cup
While my eyes well up
My eyes well up
My eyes well up

You Are Living On

JUST OTHER EVENING

WE WERE TALKING ON THE PHONE

YOUR ADVICE WAS SURE AND STEADY

BUT YOUR VOICE WAS NOT AS STRONG

ILLNESS SEEMS TO NOW HAVE CLAIMED YOU

HEAVEN’S CALLED YOU TO COME HOME

YET WE KNOW YOU HAVE NOT LEFT US ALL ALONE

CHORUS YOU ARE LIVING ON IN THE HEARTS OF THOSE WHO LOVE YOU

YOU ARE LIVING ON IN ALL THE LIVES YOU HAVE TOUCHED

DEATH IS NOT AN ENDING THOUGH PHYSICALLY YOU’RE GONE

YOU ARE LIVING ON – YOU ARE LIVING ON

VERSE 2 THE NEWS OF YOUR LEAVING US

CAME AS QUITE A SHOCK

EVEN WHEN IT IS EXPECTED

WE WANT MORE TIME ON THAT CLOCK

NOW WE GATHER ALL TOGETHER

LEANING ON EACH OTHER’S LOVE

KNOWING YOU ARE WATCHING US FROM ABOVE

CHORUS YOU ARE LIVING ON IN THE HEARTS OF THOSE WHO LOVE YOU

YOU ARE LIVING ON IN ALL THE LIVES YOU HAVE TOUCHED

DEATH IS NOT AN ENDING THOUGH PHYSICALLY YOU’RE GONE

YOU ARE LIVING ON – YOU ARE LIVING ON – YOU ARE LIVING ON
